It’s a 24-hour news channel
Al Jazeera English is an international 24-hour news channel based in Qatar. It is operated by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which also operates the Al Jazeera Documentary Channel, AJ+, and Al Jazeera Mubasher, a live politics and public interest channel that broadcasts events in real time without comment or analysis (similar to C-SPAN, House of Representatives or BBC Parliament).
The channel’s flagship English language service achieved worldwide fame during the 2011 Egyptian uprising for its unrivaled coverage of the event. Although it had a pro-Brotherhood bias, its reporting was thorough and comprehensive.
Despite its success, the channel suffered from built-in problems. Its reliance on cable providers led to disadvantageous agreements that limited the channel’s presence in American living rooms. In addition, the network faced criticism for its alleged anti-Israel bias and for airing an investigation of Britain’s Israel lobby that prompted complaints to the UK’s media watchdog, Ofcom. These issues led to a drop in audience in North America and Europe.
It’s based in the Middle East
The network has four live broadcast centres, located in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Washington DC and London. It also has a number of supporting bureaux that gather news from the world and bring it to the network’s international viewers.
Despite its detractors, Al Jazeera has revolutionised the Arab media landscape and helped fuel the 2010 Arab uprisings. Its refusal to bow to pressure from Saudi Arabia and the UAE has irritated those in power, but it appears to have gained viewers.
Founded in 1996, the channel has grown into one of the world’s most powerful and influential television channels. It is available in more than 310 million households across more than 100 countries. Its programming is often critical of the United States, but it also covers issues that are important to American audiences. The channel has also broken many taboos, including showing open debate in the Israeli Knesset and interviewing the controversial Arab-Israeli MP Azmy Bishara.
Al Jazeera has built a reputation for its refreshing approach to global and regional affairs. Its news and current affairs narratives place people at the heart of the story, with access to more than 70 international bureaus. Moreover, it is a platform where journalists are not afraid to challenge authority and report the truth.

Unlike other news channels, al jazeera english does not rely on government or corporate funding. This independence allows it to challenge established narratives and present a more balanced view of the world’s most important issues. The channel’s investigative journalism has earned it a number of awards, including the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Its programming is available worldwide on satellite, cable, and streaming services like Pluto TV. It is also available on Freeview in the UK, and on ad-supported OTT platforms like Haystack TV.
